Condolence From: Linda Eanes Jefferson
Condolence: In addition to his brilliance as a scholar, professor and sharer of knowledge to thousands of students, Dr. Roland Havis was my good friend, colleague, confidant, mentor and research advisor. I honor his memory and shall miss him immeasurably.

Unfortunately, an early Saturday morning family emergency precluded my attending my dear friend's Homegoing Service to share in the reflections of his good works and of the many lives he touched. However, in my physical absence, I send my love, while continuing to lift his family in prayers of strength and comfort.

With warm regards,
Dr. Linda Eanes Jefferson

Condolence: I’d like to take a moment to share my appreciation for the wisdom Dr.Havis has given me over the years that enabled me to develop into who I am today and who I will become.

It’s under extraordinary circumstances that I am here today. By "here" (as Dr.Havis would ask me to specify), I mean free, because before Richard Bland College I had virtually no direction. I knew I wanted to do something, something important, but it was only after semesters of Dr.Havis' guidance that I discovered what, and how.

I remember every lesson vividly. From what the true meaning of wisdom is, every PowerPoint he created, and what the meaning of truth is. Every lesson was like glimpses of light guiding me towards my own independence.

It’s ironic that the day I and Dr.Havis first spoke was because I noticed he had the same glasses as me. And here I am today able to see. I can see my dreams, my visions, and even how to do the right thing as defined by his example of leadership.

Dr. Havis, I will always remember this wisdom. I will always share it. I will always use it as guiding principles to teach others and your legacy will carry over generations. Because of how I will treat people because of how you treated me.

It has been years since I have experienced this feeling of sadness. But I also realize that because of your effort I will experience a lifetime of happiness.

So thank you Dr.Havis. Thank you for your time. Thank you for your effort. And more importantly thank you for your example.

Charles

Condolence From: Vern Lindquist, Dean of Faculty, Richard Bland College
Condolence: Prof. Havis was a legend on campus, and I knew of him by report long before I met him in person. I will always remember his courses, which I observed on a number of occasions, as unique experiences quite unlike anything else I have ever seen.

Prof. Havis had a special connection with the faculty and students of Richard Bland. We are all saddened by his loss and our hearts go out to his loved ones at this sad hour.

Condolence: To the entire Havis Family -
Roland and I arrived at Richard Bland College the same year. We first met on our interviews as we were both housed at the old Steven Kent on Crater Road. Our friendship began soon afterwards and I cannot express to you just how profound an effect he had on me in both my personal life and my professional career. We spent countless hours in his "outdoor office" in the old H&SS Building talking about everything and anything that crossed our minds. And he certainly had a phenomenal mind. I will miss those talks and will miss his friendship.

He did a lot for our students, especially those who did not have an appropriate role model in their lives. He cared about their success and did all he could to assure that they could make it in the world today.

I feel fortunate to have crossed paths with Roland and know that he has left us here on earth only to move on to his final reward.

Condolence From: Ron Neely
Condolence: It was sad when I read about the passing of Roland this morning. I knew him earlier when I was an adjunct instructor at Richard Bland College.

He had a very interesting background and I used to suggest to students to take Dr. Havis' classes.

My best wishes to his family.

Condolence From: George Dodge
Condolence: Dr. Havis was the most important figure in my adult education, as a mentor and model intellectual, a compassionate and approachable friend, and as a human being. I wish I had visited with him more in the years since I left his lectures, and the thought of no longer being able to is awful to contemplate.
