Alfred “Buck” Ray Cox, 93, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Buck was born on June 21, 1932, in Evington, Virginia to the late Rucker and Carrie Cox.
He served his country for four years as an Air Policeman in the United States Air Force, stationed in Delaware and Alaska. After returning to Virginia, he built a career as a skilled welder and was a proud member of Boilermakers Union Local 45.
While his professional life was defined by his work ethic, his personal life was defined by a presence as steady and sincere as the bluegrass music he cherished. He enjoyed watching baseball, Westerns, and NASCAR, though he was just as happy to miss a game, rerun, or race if it meant spending time with those he loved. In addition to being Dad and Buck, he was also affectionately known as “Grandaddy” throughout the community, which reflected his legendary hugs, authenticity, and the lasting impression he left on those around him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shelvy Cox; his son, Eddie Cox; and his siblings, Curtis Cox and Inez Little.
Buck’s legacy as the rock of his family lives on through his children: Denise Johnson, Paula Hood, and Lann Stewart. His memory is also cherished by his grandchildren, Jamie Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Colin Hood, Brendan Hood, Erin Pelfrey, Nathaniel Cox, Savanah Stewart, and Izzy Stewart; and his great-grandchildren, Corbin Johnson, Leilani Johnson, Cypress Johnson, Anne Berkeley Hood, and Grant Hood. He is further survived by his siblings, Clyde Cox, Naomi Coates, and Henrietta Cox; and by his brother-in-law, Jerry Browder.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026, in Sunset Memorial Park, 2901 W Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia 23831.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Crater Community Hospice in gratitude for their compassionate care.
