Bert Gerner

Bert Jimmie Gerner, 85, of North Prince George, Virginia, passed away Friday, July 13, 2018. Born October 21, 1932 in Bessie, Oklahoma to Gottlieb Gerner and Eda Lenaburg Gerner. He attended school in Mt. View, Oklahoma and worked in Robinson's Grocery Store. After high school he decided to enlist in the United States Air Force and was stationed in England at Sculthrope Air Force Base for three years. He attended computer schools in London and Germany. After his time in the military he was hired as a civilian in the computer field at Ardmore, Oklahoma Air Force Base. In 1957 Bert married Rita Aston Gerner. Bert worked 35 years with the federal government developing computer software for the United States Army, then installing and maintaining it worldwide. During this time, he was Director of Computer Systems Command at Ft. Lee, Virginia. He retired November 30, 1987 in Surry County, Virginia on the James River and enjoyed fishing and gardening. Bert was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hopewell, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother Ryan Garner; and sister Martha Stehr. He has one sister, Eunice Keil, who lives in Kansas City, Missouri. Bert is survived by his wife of 60 years; son, Bret L. Gerner and his wife, Kimberly Nesbit Gerner, of Chester; daughters, Karla J. Gerner, of Prince George and Karol Gerner Bowman and her husband Denny Bowman, of Joplin, Missouri; sister in law Rochelle Everline and her husband Louis of Seaford Delaware, grandchildren, Brad Gerner, Todd Howlett and his wife Jessica Howlett, Hunter Perkins, Derek Bowman and his wife Amber Hunter Bowman, Mikal Bowman, and Brettany Patsel; and six great-grandchildren and many special nieces of nephews including Don and Patsy Keil from Kansas City, Missouri and Darrell and Judy Stehr from Clinton, Oklahoma, Vanette Trumm of Winchester, Virginia and Ken Everline of Laurel, Delaware; lifelong friends Gene and Shirley Turner, David Turner, Sandy McDaniel, Terri Barras and families, and Marvin and Adalee Mundy. The family is thankful to Care Givers Mia Miles, Linda Cole, Tammy Stewart and faithful dog Chili. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Interment private.
