With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear mother on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as she was called home at 12:01 a.m. She was 94 years old, the daughter of the late Karl and Marie Bernet and was born in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, on September 1, 1931.

Our mother was one of 13 siblings and survived by her three children: Annie Holdsworth, James Smith (Vicky), Richard Smith (Lynne), and preceded by her son the late Robert Bernet Smith.

Oma was blessed with six grandchildren: Sara Barrett (Benjamin), Dalton Holdsworth (Alex), Kristen Smith (Emra), Robert Smith (Margarita), Rebekah Bennett (Jared), Lloyd Baker (Cindy) and six great-grandchildren: Jackson Barrett, Malakai Bennett, Gabe Bennett, Chris Smith-Bennett, Dillon Baker, and Gavin Baker, along with many other beloved family members and friends.

Berta attended Trinity United Methodist Church whenever she was able. She enjoyed planting flowers every spring and summer, entertaining her German friends with coffee and cake, sitting on her porch watching hummingbirds and enjoying nature, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her beloved lifelong friends.

Although our mom and Oma lived a simple life, she was always full of love, laughter, and encouragement, which she instilled in her family. Her giant heart will be cherished forever. Until we see you again, Mom/Oma, we love you so much and thank you for being the very best.

At the request of the family, funeral services will be private and directed by E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes.
