Bonnie Jean Whitaker Burton, 76, of Chesterfield, VA, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Born in Petersburg, VA on September 9, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Russell Everette Whitaker, Sr. and Myrtle Virginia Bowman Whitaker. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald “Donnie” Burton; her brother, Jerry Whitaker; and her niece, Tricia Whitaker White.
In her younger years, Bonnie began her career as an office worker with Titmus Optical in Petersburg before going on to Carver Middle School, where she served as an office manager, where she retired after 30 dedicated years. She was a member of Ettrick Baptist Church. Bonnie cherished the many special roles she held throughout her life- daughter, sister, wife, mother, and aunt- but none was more precious to her than being a “Grammy.” She loved her family immensely and was always ready to care for and help anyone who needed her, giving of herself without hesitation. Her family was her greatest joy, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Bonnie also held a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Molly, who kept her busy, brought her companionship, and was a cherished part of her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Stacy Burton Whaley and husband, Todd; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Rayne Burton Whaley and Hunter Corbin Burton Whaley; sister, Carol Hunt and husband, Richard; brother, Russell Whitaker, Jr. and wife, Gay; niece, Debbie Cox and husband, Kenny; nephew, Jay Whitaker and wife, Jennifer; her fur-baby, Molly; and many other extended family members and special friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bonnie’s memory to the American Lung Association, https://American Lung Association/?form=FUNLTWAXLLP, a veterans organization of your choosing, or an animal charity of your choosing.
