Carlyle Philip Comer

Carlyle Philip Comer, 88, of Colonial Heights, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2023.  He was born September 17, 1934 in Vinton, Virginia to Marvin and Christine Sublette Comer. He was predeceased by wife, Barbara Altice Comer; and second wife, Ingrid Westerholm Comer; daughter, Debra McDaniel; son, Philip Comer; brother, William Comer; and sister, Virginia Dudley.

Carlyle graduated from William Byrd High School, Vinton, in 1952, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Roanoke College, a Master of Engineering degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a Master Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from VPI & SU.  He worked as an Operations Research Analyst and Computer Systems Analyst for several private companies, the Department of the Navy and Department of the Army.  He retired from the Army Logistics Management College, Ft Lee. Carlyle and Ingrid were avid and accomplished ballroom dancers and enjoyed social dancing. However, he derived even greater pleasure and satisfaction by encouraging and helping others become dancers, and through performances with Ingrid, for the enjoyment of the residents of retirement and nursing care facilities. 

He is survived by his sister, Norma Wise, son, Mark Comer; son-in-law, Philip McDaniel, daughter-in-law Pamela Comer, stepdaughter, Lisa Shumate and spouse Sheri Smith; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2023 in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia, with the Reverend David Prather officiating.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
