Charles W. “Dewey” Harrison, 90, of Dinwiddie County, VA, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Born on July 17, 1935, in Gumberry, NC, he was the son of the late Larry V. Harrison, Sr. and Annie Mae Harrison. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley O. Harrison; brothers, Larry V. Harrison, Jr. and Leonard F. Harrison; sisters, Annie Mae Blazek and Virginia H. Livesay.
Dewey married the love of his life, Shirley, on December 11, 1953, and they shared 70 wonderful years of marriage before the Lord called his soulmate home. Dewey’s first job was television repair for Friendly Television. He later worked for Fried & Company Cement Mixing and Brown & Williamson Tobacco for several years before hauling produce and opening his own fruit stand. He then purchased his first supermarket, Cut Rite Fruit Center. After it was destroyed by fire, Dewey rebuilt and established what would become his legacy, Harrison's Supermarket. In addition to the supermarket, he founded Harrison's Rentals and Mobile Home Park. Dewey was well known throughout the community for his generosity and willingness to help those in need. He served on the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors from 1988 to 1992, including one year as Chairman. After 32 years in the grocery business, Dewey and Shirley retired from the supermarket industry but remained active in their other business ventures.
He is survived by his five daughters, Cathy H. Branch (Jack), Debra H. Newcomb, Donna H. Bain, Carol H. Wicks (Johnny), and Dawn H. Sheppard (Frankie); grandchildren, Ryan L. Porter, Sr., Brent W. Harrison (Cici), Lindsay D. Johnson (Thad), P. Daniel Bain (Christina), John I. Wicks, Jr. (Meagan), Wilbur F. “Trey” Sheppard, III. (Ashley), Chris Cornett, and Josh Wicks; great-grandchildren, Ryan L. Porter, Jr., Taylor N. Cornett, Brandon T. Cornett, Kinsley M. Bain, P. Colby Bain, Reagan D. Johnson, Easton R. Harrison, Ashton T. Sheppard, Hannah G. Sheppard, Braxton G. Wicks, Macy E. Wicks, Savannah Johnson, Savannah Wicks; great-great-grandchild, Rylan Cornett; two brothers, Herman Harrison and Garland W. Harrison; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dewey’s caretakers, Trina Bishop and Iris Wilson, for their loving care and support.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Western Heights Baptist Church, 24416 Cox Road, N Dinwiddie, VA 23803. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Jonathan Dundalow and Rev. Jim Burton officiating. Interment will follow the funeral in Southlawn Memorial Park, S Prince George, VA. Arrangements are by the Crater Road Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 3935 S Crater Rd, Petersburg, VA.
