Charles Richard “Charlie” Shreve, 80, will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, dedicated community servant, and a man whose smile could light up a room. Known for his hard work, generous spirit, and wonderful sense of humor, Charlie had a special gift for making people laugh and brightening their day with a well-timed joke.
Charlie lived a life rooted in faith, family, service, and friendship. He faithfully served his church as a Sunday school teacher and deacon and gave generously of his time to his community through Rotary, serving as club president and earning recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also shared his time and talents as a Scoutmaster, helping guide and encourage young people. Whether at church, in his community, or among friends, Charlie led by example through his dedication, dependability, and willingness to work hard.
Above all, Charlie treasured his family. He was the beloved husband of Dare and a proud father to Jason (wife Cheryl) and Katherine (husband Jake). His greatest joy, however, could often be found at the river at Coles Point, where some of his happiest moments were spent fishing, caring for the property he loved, and watching family and friends gather to enjoy it. The river was more than a place to Charlie; it was a place to make memories, share laughter, and bring the people he loved together.
Charlie especially cherished time spent playing with his grandchildren—Hannah, Emily, Ethan, and Dylan, and great grandchildren Jonah, Clary, and Isaiah. He delighted in seeing them enjoy the river and took great pride in creating a place where they could make memories that would last a lifetime. His love was evident in the time he gave, the work he put in, and the happiness he found in seeing others happy.
A hardworking man who knew how to enjoy life, Charlie balanced his strong sense of responsibility with a playful spirit and an ever-present sense of humor. His laughter, his jokes, his warm smile, and his love for those around him will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Charlie's legacy lives on in the family he loved, the community he served, the faith he shared, and the countless memories made beside the river at Coles Point. He leaves behind a lasting reminder that a life well lived is measured not only by what we accomplish, but by the love we give, the laughter we share, and the lives we touch along the way.
A celebration of life will be held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church 3110 Greenwood Ave, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 on Saturday, October 31st, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. The family will welcome friends an hour before.
