Charles Edward Smith

Charles Edward Smith, 69, of Spring Grove, Virginia passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Born September 28, 1955, he was the son of the late Paul Edward and Vaughnie Alvena Smith, and was also preceded in death by his son, David Samuel Mccay; and brothers, John Smith, Jake Smith, Vaughan Smith.

Charles was a faithful member of Rock Church of Petersburg, where he worshiped for many years.

He had been a plumber since 1976 and spent his life working various jobs in the trade. He never officially retired—he just kept going. He was proud of his work and was known by many as a true workaholic who always stayed busy. If he wasn’t fixing pipes, he was working on old vehicles, a hobby he truly enjoyed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Darlene Smith; son, Charles Edward Mccay, Sr.; grandson, Charles Edward Mccay, Jr. and fiancée, Madison; brother, David Smith and wife, Cindy; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Rock Church of Petersburg, 2301 County Dr, Petersburg, VA 23803. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E.
