Clarice Nell Hunnel, 72, of Hopewell, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on May 6, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Clayton Clawson and Peggy Nelson Clawson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Clawson.
Nell was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose gentle spirit and caring heart touched everyone who knew her. A faithful member of Dinwiddie Baptist Church, she was proud of her relationship with God and lived her life with kindness, grace, and compassion.
She will be remembered most for the love she shared with her family and the simple joys that brought her happiness. Nell enjoyed shopping, cooking meals for those she loved, and spending peaceful days at the beach. Whether gathered around the table with family or enjoying time with her grandchildren, she treasured every moment spent with the people closest to her. Her warmth, quiet strength, and loving nature will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, Arthur William Hunnel Sr.; her children, Arthur William “Billy” Hunnel Jr. of Dinwiddie, Christopher William Hunnel and wife Cathy of Dinwiddie, and Christina Irene McDaniel and husband Chris of Hopewell; her grandchildren, Devlyn Thomas Hunnel of Dinwiddie, Shawn William Hilton and wife Katie of Dinwiddie, Phillip William Hunnel and Marissa Guy of Dinwiddie, Carlie Anne Hunnel of Amelia, Kaylin N. Summerfield and husband Kyle of Harrisonburg, and Noah E. Hunnel of Dinwiddie; her great-grandchildren, Robert Hunnel of Chesterfield, Hannah Hilton of Dinwiddie, and Remi Hilton of Dinwiddie; her sister, Nancy Jean Washburn of Ashland; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Phillip Hunnel of Goochland, Mike Hunnel and wife Helen of Chesterfield, Helen Cox of Chesterfield, and Linda Gayle Lafoon of Chesterfield; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Dinwiddie Baptist Church, 14818 Wilkinson Road, Dinwiddie, Virginia 23841.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
