Dabney Eppes Short, Jr., son of the late Dabney Eppes Short, Sr. and Virginia Falconer Electra Pegram Short, died at home on Friday, July 7, 2023 under hospice care. Dabney is survived by his wife, Stuart King Short; his son, Dee (Kim) and their children, Kayla and Drew; his son, Greg (Arti) and their sons, Cameron and Colin; his step-daughter, Tammy Shannon Krukiel (Eric) and their children, Andrew Krukiel; David Krukiel (Colleen); and Kelly Krukiel Moon (Randy) and Dabney's great-grandchildren, Carter, Clair, Gavin and Blair; his step-daughter, Jenni Flowers Honn (Steve) and their sons, Damon and Andrew; and his step-son Glenn Shannon. He was predeceased by his stepson, David Flowers, who is survived by his daughter, Brooke. Dabney is also survived by his sister, Barbara Short McCants (David) and their children, Mark (Siti), Ellen McCants Selking (Joe), Matt (Shari) and their grandchildren. His brother, John Pegram Short (Carolyn Underwood Short) predeceased him. Their children are J.P. and Crystal (Jamie) and their children. Not to be forgotten are the mother of Dee and Greg, Nancy Minetree Short Wilkerson (Calvin) and the mother of Tammy and Glenn Shannon, Carolyn Shannon Short.

Dabney was an active member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a Trustee and spent a number of years as Chairman. He was appointed to the Camp Baker Management Board in May 2010 and had served continuously; Dabney also served on the Board of Directors of the Bellwood Federal Credit Union beginning that volunteer work in 1980. In the Masonic arena Dabney was a member of Chester Lodge No. 94, Petersburg Union Royal Arch Chapter No. 7, Richmond Valley Scottish Rite (Life Member), ACCA Shrine, ACCA Mini Patrol, Chester Shrine Club.

Dabney was a graduate of Petersburg High School class of 1954. He began his higher education at VPI and continued at VCU. He held a Master's Degree in Business and Management. Dabney always advised that having many jobs helped a person find what fitted. He claimed at least 18 jobs. He began his US Government employment at the Federal Reformatory in Prince George and advanced to Defense Supply Center Richmond in contracting. From there he became an instructor at the Army Logistics Management College at Fort Lee where he taught contracting. He retired in 1995 after 35 years of government service. But retirement did not last. After a short R&R period, he became a facilitator and teacher under contracts with the US Government and later was a supervisor of buyers on a collateral support team at DSCR. For several years Dabney was also on the adjunct faculty at Richard Bland College.

A celebration of Dabney's life will be held at Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. All are welcome to attend a reception following the service.
