Daniel Lewis Songer, 80, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Born August 14, 1945, he was the son of the late Edwin Lee and Mattie Sue Epling Songer. He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Kimberly Danet; three sisters; three brothers; and his cherished cat, Country.

A proud United States Army veteran, Danny served his country as a tank mechanic. It was during his time in the military that his natural talent for turning wrenches and solving complex mechanical issues truly shined.

He was affectionately and widely known as the “Lawnmower Man.” Danny found immense joy in his garage, fixing broken lawn mowers and selling them to folks in town. He also enjoyed working out on the farm and took great pride in maintaining the property.

More than his mechanical skills or his tireless work ethic, Danny will be remembered for the size of his heart. He was the kind of man who was always available to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it, no questions asked.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Hilda Jean Songer; daughter, Kendra D. Cole and husband, Larry; grandsons, Travis Heider, Blake Songer and wife, Rebecca; granddaughter, Heather Danet-Yandle and husband, Cody; brother, Ike Songer; and other extended family members.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, S. Prince George, Virginia 23805. The family will receive friends Monday evening September 14, 2026 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
