Deborah Ann Coates, 71, of Colonial Heights passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy, and kindness. She was a devoted Catholic, her vibrant spirit touched the hearts of many. Born December 29, 1951, she was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Harry and Frances Eleanore Coates. She was known for her unwavering positivity and boundless love for those around her. She found solace and purpose in her faith, actively participating as a dedicated member of the choir at St. Martin of Tours at Ft. Lee, where she was also a previous member of CWOC.

A 3rd Order Carmelite, Debby took on the name Elizabeth Marie as she deepened her commitment to her spiritual journey. She made her cursillo weekend in July 2018. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, shaping her character and influencing her interactions with others. She found great joy in the contemplative practices of the Carmelite order. Debby was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Regina Coeli 2032, based out of St. Ann Catholic Church, S. Chesterfield.

In her later years, Debby discovered a newfound passion for painting, expressing her creativity on canvas. Her art became a reflection of her inner beauty and served as a testament to her ever-evolving spirit.

Beyond her religious and artistic pursuits, Debby reveled in the simple pleasures of life. She often engaged in card and board games with friends and family. Her laughter echoed in the midst of these gatherings, creating cherished memories for all who had the privilege of sharing those moments with her.

What set Debby apart was her boundless love and infectious joy. She was a beacon of positivity, radiating warmth and kindness to everyone she encountered. Never one to harbor negativity, she approached life with a smile that could light up the darkest of days. Debby's unwavering happiness and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.

She is survived by her sister, Lynn Settle (Wayne); brother, James P. Coates (Arleen); nieces and nephews, Whitney Barrera (Milton), James K. Coates (Stephanie), Charles Coates, Stephanie Coates; and other extended family members.

A funeral mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in St. Ann Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Hwy, South Chesterfield, VA 23834. Interment will follow in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday, October 23, 2023 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Priests for Life, PO Box 236695, Cocoa, FL 32923.
