Donna Brockwell Jones Mitchell, 90, of Carson, Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Born on May 20, 1936, in Carson, Virginia, Donna lived a life defined by unwavering faith, unconditional love, and lifelong devotion to her family.
Donna was a devoted and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Carson, Virginia, where her faith remained the foundation of her life. Her Christian faith was reflected in the kindness, compassion, and quiet example she set for those around her. Donna also dedicated many years of her life to caring for others through her career as a nurse, a profession that perfectly reflected her nurturing heart.
Donna's life was marked by remarkable strength and resilience. Throughout the years, she faced countless health challenges, yet time and again she defied the odds with unwavering faith, quiet determination, and extraordinary grace.
Donna and Thomas Slade Jones shared four beloved children and built the family that became the greatest blessing of Donna's life. The family they created together continued to grow through their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who remained the center of Donna's world.
Of all the roles Donna held throughout her life, none brought her greater joy than being "Grammy." She devoted countless years to helping raise her grandchildren. She was there for the everyday moments that would later become her family's most treasured memories. One of Donna's greatest blessings was becoming a great-grandmother. She treasured every moment spent with Kamden and Baileigh, who brought immeasurable joy to her later years.
Donna never met a stranger. She had a remarkable way of making people feel at home. Her kitchen was the heart of that hospitality. There was always something cooking, a glass of ice-cold sweet tea, a homemade dessert waiting on the counter, and enough food for anyone who happened to stop by. Feeding others wasn't simply something Donna enjoyed—it was one of the many ways she showed her love. Sharing a meal around Donna's table meant far more than good food—it meant family, fellowship, laughter, and love.
Donna is survived by her son, Wayne Jones (Cindy Jones); daughter, Connie Harris (William Harris); daughter, Glenda Hunter (James Hunter); and son, Gregory Jones; Step-son Jessie Mitchell; Step-son Brandon Mitchell; her beloved grandchildren, Taylor Childrey (Kevin Childrey), Slade Jones (Courtney Jones), Thomas Hunter, Noah Hunter, and Wyatt Jones; and step grandchildren Dj, Dakota , Bryor ’s Maryssa and Jesse jr.; her cherished twin great-grandchildren, Kamden Childrey and Baileigh Childrey; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love.
Donna was the daughter of the late Alvin S. Brockwell and Ruth Vest Brockwell. She was preceded in death by her brother, Roy S. Brockwell; her sister, Ruth Gayle Brockwell Oakley; Janet Pecht Brockwell; her first husband, Thomas Slade Jones; and her second husband, William Austin Mitchell.
A funeral service celebrating Donna's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 South Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805. Interment will immediately follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, South Prince George, Virginia 23805.
Donna's life was a beautiful reflection of unwavering faith, unconditional love, and lifelong devotion to her family. Her greatest legacy lives on through the generations she helped raise, the traditions she created, the values she instilled, and the love she so freely gave.
Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing that her faith has become sight and that she is forever at peace in the presence of her Savior. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love Grammy.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Donna's longtime caregiver, Gabrielle Toombs, as well as the many nurses, caregivers, hospice staff, and healthcare professionals who cared for Donna over the years. Your compassion, kindness, and dedication meant more than words can express.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Shiloh Baptist Church, PO Box 178 Virginia, in Donna's memory. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
