Evelyn Susan Henderson, 78, of South Chesterfield, VA, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Born in Whitesburg, KY on October 16, 1947, she was the daughter of the late James Monroe Williams and Doris Annie Buddle Williams. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, John Williams (Ruth); mother and father-in-law, Tom and Bessie Henderson; brothers-in-law, Cecil Henderson (Kathy) and James “Brother” Henderson; and her sister-in-law, Michelle Henderson.
She is survived by her loving husband of over 61 years, Bruce Henderson; son, James Henderson; daughter, Kimberly Henderson; grandson, Devin Henderson (Constance); five sisters, Eileen Sanders (Kedrick), Catherine Tucker (Gary), Debbie Adkins (Jeff), Virginia Sandusky, and Doris Jean “DJ” Frazier; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald Henderson (Dru Boyd), Ruby Tomlinson (Maurice), Brenda Lowry (Chuck), Danny Henderson (Faye), Tommy Henderson (Kimberly), and Buddy Henderson; sister-in-law, Dottie Henderson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and special friends.
Evelyn was a longtime and faithful member of Gill Grove Baptist Church in Chesterfield, VA. She spent the majority of her life as a dedicated homemaker, creating a warm and loving home for her family. Evelyn found joy in life’s simple pleasures- working puzzles, tending to her beautiful flower beds, and spending time reading. She was especially known for her exceptional baking skills, delighting others with her homemade candies and fudge. She loved hummingbirds and had a kind, generous heart, deeply loving her family and friends and welcoming everyone she met as if they were her own. In her later years, Evelyn and her husband, Bruce, enjoyed dining at local restaurants, forming many meaningful friendships along the way, especially her beloved Captain Toms Seafood Restaurant family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Gill Grove Baptist Church, 10726 River Road, Chesterfield, VA 23838. Interment will follow in Gill Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Arrangements are by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gill Grove Baptist Church, 10726 River Road, Chesterfield, VA 23838.
