Francis “Wayne” Stevens, 78, of North Dinwiddie, VA, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Born in Petersburg, VA, on February 26, 1948, he was the son of the late Arthur Charles Stevens and Martha Pearl Stevens. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Mary Stevens; and his brothers, Claiborne Stevens (June), James Stevens, and Alton Stevens (Evelyn).
Wayne was a graduate of Dinwiddie High School, where he served as co-captain of the school's first football team. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army as a military police officer before beginning a career in law enforcement. Wayne retired from Southside Virginia Training Center after more than 20 years as a police officer. He also served as Chief of Namozine Volunteer Fire Department for one year and remained a lifetime member of the department. He was a longtime member of Western Heights Baptist Church. Wayne cared deeply about his community and was a mentor to many young men and women throughout the years. He enjoyed coaching little league football and spent many years playing softball.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Lucy (Darrell) and Sherry Stevens; grandchildren, Kevin Lucy (Kaitlyn), Brittney Lucy, Brandon Lucy, Kenneth Stevens, and Keith Lucy; great-grandchildren, Aden Lucy, Aleah Lucy, Charles Lucy, Judith Lucy, and Autumn Lucy; close special friends, Ronnie Erb and Jim Brown; and many other extended family members and special friends.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Crater Community Hospice, especially Father Thierry Hakpon, SSC, and Wayne's devoted caregiver, Yvonne, for the compassionate care, kindness, and support she provided throughout his journey.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Bermuda Memorial Park, 1901 Bermuda Hundred Rd, Chester, VA 23836.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Wayne’s honor to the Namozine Volunteer Fire & EMS Co. 4, 3913 Pelham Avenue, North Dinwiddie, Virginia 23803, or to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805.
