Gene Bolling Wells, 77, of Matoaca, Virginia, was called home to his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Gene was born on September 2, 1947, in Petersburg, Virginia, and lived most of his life in Matoaca. He was part of the first graduating class of Matoaca High School and attended Richard Bland College and the college of William & Mary. He ultimately worked in numerous IT analyst and managerial roles for Chesterfield County, retiring after 30 years of service. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a cook, earning commendations as a sharpshooter—there were no complaints in the mess hall.
A lifelong member of Matoaca Baptist Church, Gene was a deacon, choir and praise team member, and served as interim choir director on multiple occasions. He touched many lives through his love and leadership in music and his work with the music groups Promise and Arise.
Gene was known for his woodworking skills and also loved traveling, gardening, and fishing—but his greatest joy was his two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lottie Wells. Gene is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn; sons, Michael (Allie) and their daughter, Julia, and Patrick (Beth) and their daughter, Abby; brother, Jerry (Debi); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Matoaca Baptist Church, 6409 River Road, S Chesterfield, VA 23803. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will take place privately in Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, VA.
