Gwen Smith Moseley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 20, 2026 at the age of 72. She was the daughter of the late John Cecil Smith, Jr. and Joyce Hammack Smith. Gwen was born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 19, 1954 and spent much of her youth there until moving to Colonial Heights, Virginia in 1967.
She was a 1972 graduate of Colonial Heights High School and attended Radford University, where she majored in Physical Education. She later earned a Master of Administration and Counseling from Virginia State University.
Gwen dedicated 40 years to the Colonial Heights Public School system, serving as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, and administrator. She concluded her distinguished career as the Director of Data and Assessment for the school division. Throughout her career, she was known for her unwavering commitment to her students, colleagues, and the pursuit of educational excellence. In recognition of her impact, she was named Teacher of the Year in 2011. She was also inducted into the Colonial Heights Hall of Fame in 2003 as a Coach and member of the 1986 Virginia State Championship Softball Team
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Gwen's greatest joy came from her faith, her family, and serving others. She was a devoted member of Wesley United Methodist Church for 59 years, where her faith guided the way she lived her life. Whether through church ministries, lending a helping hand, or simply offering a kind word of encouragement, Gwen's generous spirit touched countless lives. She believed deeply in caring for others and demonstrated that love through quiet acts of service, steadfast friendship, and genuine compassion.
Gwen will be remembered for her quiet strength, grace, and unwavering love for those around her. She had a gift for making people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. Her legacy lives on in the many students she inspired, the colleagues she mentored, the friends she cherished, and the family she loved so deeply.
She is survived by her daughter Shannon Lodge (Mark), son Travis Moseley (Sara), son Reid Moseley (Kalene), her adored grandchildren Bryson Lodge, Cameron Lodge, Avery Lodge, Cate Moseley, Carson Moseley, Mateo Moseley, and Mia Moseley; sister Freddie Carr (Bobby), twin sister Lynn Nugent, brother Tim Smith and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Ronnie Moseley.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Colonial Heights High School Auditorium 3600 Conduit Road Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. The family will receive friends before the service from 10:00 AM -12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Colonial Heights Education Foundation or Crater Community Hospice.
