Herbert Blackburn, Jr., 95, of Petersburg passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026. Born October 28, 1930, he was the son of the late Mary Larkins and Herbert Blackburn, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances V. Blackburn; brothers, Robert Blackburn and Julian Blackburn; and sister, Mary Elizabeth Woodcock.
Born and raised a country boy, Herbert spent his early years working on a farm in North Carolina. It was there, surrounded by the fields, that he developed a strong work ethic and a down-to-earth spirit that he carried with him throughout his life.
Herbert proudly served his country in the United States Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant (MSG) after 28 years of dedicated and honorable service. His distinguished military career included a tour of duty in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He served as the head NCO of the Culinary School at Fort Lee. Following his retirement from active duty, Herbert's commitment to the school remained devoted, and he continued his vital work there as a civilian contractor.
Herbert was a dedicated member of the American Legion Post 2 in Petersburg. He absolutely loved fishing and the peace it brought him.
He was an undeniably awesome cook. He took charge of all the family holiday meals, using his extraordinary culinary gifts to bring everyone together around the table. Above all else, Herbert loved his family deeply. He cherished every single moment he spent with them and the memories they created together.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Reed; son, Danny Blackburn; two granddaughters, Pamela Goodrich and husband, Jim, Jenny Kramer and husband, Eric; two great-grandsons, Cody and Gideon; and other extended family members.
