Hubert Preston Herald, 90, of Prince George, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, he lived with faith, humility, and service. He entered eternal rest surrounded by loved ones and the promise of everlasting life and joins his beloved wife Mary Lou in heaven.

Hubert was the son of Albert Britton Herald and Vinnie Minnie Poe Herald from Tazewell, Va., both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Mary Lou Herald, and by his former wife and mother of his children Nancy Carol Herald, three brothers William(Bill) Herald, Britton Herald, and Edward Herald.

He is survived by his sister Pauline Herald (Danny) from Tazewell. He also leaves behind his beloved children Sherry Anndelyn Harris (James) from Chesterfield, Va; Pamla Kay Pekrun (Kenneth) from Manteo, NC; Danny Herald (Debbie) from Dinwiddie, VA; and Timmy Herald (Mary) from Prince George, VA; and his beloved stepchildren Doris Faye Linkous (Tim), and Donald Wayne Clements both from Prince Goerge, Va. And many nieces and nephews that he cherished.

Hubert was a proud and loving grandfather to Matthew Preston Harris (Susan), Michelle McNally, Courtney Forrest (Dave), Leon Harris (Tina), Melissa Woodard (Jordan), Danny Herald, Jr (Chrissy), Shannon Herald, Lindsey Herald, Jennifer Carper (Jeff), Andrew Linkous (Tiffany), Corey Linkous (Clary), and Sampson Sutherland (Kaitlyn). He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Georgia Mae Harris, James Harris, Davy Forrest, Elizabeth Forrest, Henry Harris, William Woodard, Daniel Woodard, Tristan Herald, Jacob Herald, Logan Bennett, Hailey Bennett, Anna Carper, Caden Linkous, Cooper Linkous, Josie Linkous, Isabella Linkous, Nash Sutherland, Stevin Coleman, and Patrick Baldwin who all brought him great joy and happiness.

Hubert was raised in the western mountains of Virginia which he loved and spoke of often. After graduating from high school, he married and moved to the Petersburg Prince George area of Virginia where he remained the rest of his life. He worked for a nursery, learning the trade which he loved and enjoyed the rest of his life. He briefly worked for the railroad company before joining the Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) in 1960 where he remained for the rest of his career. He began as a groundman with the company and moved up the ranks until he retired in 1992 as the Construction Superintendent for the Chesterfield District. Hubert was highly regarded and respected by his co-workers and employees throughout his career.

Hubert enjoyed construction and doing electrical work, building his first home for his family in the mid-1970’s. He loved going camping and enjoyed staying at the beach. His passion was working with wood and after retiring, his part-time hobby became his full-time passion. He and his wife made beautiful clocks, shelves, stands, ball holders, dolls and beds, frames, cabinets, and so much more! They traveled locally to many crafts shows displaying and selling their handmade goods. Their children and grandchildren have many of their pieces to treasure forever.

Hubert was a member of Gary’s United Methodist Church, a member of the Hopewell Moose where he and Mary Lou enjoyed many social events and danced the night away. Early in his career, he was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and upon retirement, he participated in the Virginia Power Retirees Club of the Petersburg Office. He enjoyed gardening, thrift shopping with Mary Lou, and visits from his grand and great-grandchildren.

Hubert will be remembered as having a powerful presence and a giving man with unwavering love for his family. He was kindhearted, did many projects and jobs for others, and shared his many talents freely. His laughter and smile will be remembered, and while he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on through all the lives he has touched. Those who knew and loved Hubert will find comfort in knowing he is now at peace, in no pain, remembering his good times and family, will be reunited with loved ones, especially his beloved Mary Lou, and rejoicing in the Kingdom of Heaven and in the presence of the Lord.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home and Crematory, 3935 South Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Gary’s United Methodist Church Cemetery, 13501 Sunnybrook Rd, Petersburg, VA 23805, with a reception to follow in the church.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
