James Michael “Mickey” Stone Sr., born September 5, 1947, in Roanoke, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 78. Mickey was the son of the late Samuel Boone Stone and Mary Ruth Layman Stone.

Known to all—family, friends, and acquaintances alike—as “Mickey”. A devoted father and grandfather, he poured his heart into his family and took great pride in each generation that followed him.

Shortly after graduating from high school, Mickey was drafted into the United States Army, where he served two tours in the Vietnam War. His service was a defining chapter in his life, and his courage, resilience, and dedication remained evident in the decades that followed.

Mickey built a lifelong career in the Amateur Radio and Short-Wave Radio industry, a field he embraced with passion and expertise. As a business owner for more than 40 years, he became a trusted figure within the radio community, respected for his knowledge, craftsmanship, and unwavering commitment to the hobby and profession he loved.

Outside of work, Mickey was an avid fisherman and a true car and racing enthusiast. Whether on the water or near the track, he found joy in the places and pastimes that brought him peace and excitement.

Mickey is survived by his beloved sister, Connie Elaine Franks, and her husband Ritchie, along with their children — his niece Rachel Franks Copley and nephew Jason Franks —and their families.

He is also survived by his children and grandchildren, who were the greatest treasures of his life: his daughter, Mary Heather Opland and her husband, Matthew, and his granddaughter, Autumn Riley Hutchins; his son, James Michael Stone Jr. and his wife, Courtney Dawn, and his grandchildren Kris Hill and Heaven Lee Anne Stone; his son, Samuel Christopher Stone and his wife, Kristin, and his grandchildren Kaydence Marie Reid and Samuel Sawyer Stone.

Mickey’s legacy lives on in the love he shared, the stories he told, the passions he pursued, and the many lives he touched through his determination, humor, and hard work. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.

Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
