Janie Lucille Smith, 97, of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Born in Virginia on January 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John D. Vest and Mary B. Vest. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl J. Smith; son, Carl D. Smith; daughter, Dorcas L. Smith; son-in-law, Ernest Pope; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Smith; grandsons, Marti Smith and Darian Smith; and siblings, Dot, Sadie, Gladys, Edne, Junior, Robert, and Estelle.

Janie was a longtime member of Harrowgate Worship Center in Chester, where she enjoyed singing in church with her husband. She retired from Long's Manufacturing in Petersburg after many years as a machinist. In her free time, she enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her flowers and garden, baking, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her son, Phil E. Smith; granddaughters, Angie Argueta and Rena Delvecchio; grandsons, Stanley, Mark, and Jason Pope; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Ellen Dudley and Ernie Vest; and numerous other extended family members and friends.

The family would like to give special thanks to Easter Haven Private Care Home for their loving care given to Janie in the last two years.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in Bermuda Memorial Park, 1901 Bermuda Hundred Rd, Chester, VA 23836.
