John E. Andrews, 88, of Colonial Heights passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at his home. Born on May 6, 1938, he was the son of the late Carter and Dorothy Andrews, and was also preceded in death by his son, Louis G. Andrews; daughter, Molly A. Painter; brother, Carter M. Andrews; sisters, Myrtie M. Taylor and Maggie L. Saunders.
John spent his career working as an engineer for C&P Telephone, retiring after many years of dedicated and faithful service.
An extraordinarily talented woodworker, he poured his patience and precision into crafting beautiful furniture, leaving behind pieces of his legacy that will be cherished for generations.
His grandest passion, however, was his devotion to the Lord and his church community. For over three decades, from 1992 to 2025, John was a member of Colonial Christian Church, where he served with a servant's heart as both an Elder and a Deacon. He poured his heart into looking after the church, serving as the dedicated caretaker of the grounds and ensuring that every corner of the house of worship was always up to par. His voice also lifted the congregation as a member of the choir. In his later years, he continued his walk of faith alongside his family as a member of Highland United Methodist Church.
John is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Ellen Andrews; brother, Carl Andrews; nephews, James Skelton and wife, Martha, David Skelton; and other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
