John Barry Hayhurst

John Barry Hayhurst, 71, of Disputanta passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024. Born November 20, 1952, he was the son of Bettie Mae Hayhurst and the late John Leroy Hayhurst, Jr. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Wolfrey Hayhurst; and sister, Bettie Ann Wicklund.

He began with the Petersburg Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Detective. He went on to serve with the Smithfield and Isle of Wight Police Departments, later becoming a Deputy Marshal for the Virginia Court System. John retired as a Detective with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.

He is survived by two children, Jamie Ziegenfuss Spears and husband, Steven; Robert Preston Ziegenfuss and wife, Rebecca; four grandchildren, Conner Spears, Peyton Ziegenfuss, Garrett Spears, Amber Ziegenfuss; mother, Bettie Mae Hayhurst; brothers, Robert Leroy Hayhurst and wife, Joan, Richard Wayne Hayhurst and wife, Joy; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, 2024 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805, with a procession immediately following. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, S.
