Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Kenneth “Kenny” Rhodes, 81, died peacefully at Dunlop House Memory Care in Colonial Heights, VA on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Born in Petersburg, Virginia on January 27, 1945. He was the son of the late William L Rhodes and Margaret “Kathleen” Rhodes. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Barbara “Bobbie” Wray Rhodes who passed away in September of 2024.

He is survived by two daughters, Daphne Jolly (David) of Colonial Heights, VA and Carol Bennett (Matt) of Colonial Heights; 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth “Liz” Gegenheimer (Mike), Emily Smith (William), Alexandra “Alex” Jolly, Chase Bennett, Austin Bennett and Mason Bennett; 5 great-grandchildren, Evan Foster, Lexie Foster, Michael Gegenheimer, Owen Foster, and Gabriel Smith; 3 brothers Claiborne Rhodes (Betty), James “Jim” Rhodes, Charles “Snookie” Rhodes (Deborah); sister Christine “Sissy” Williams (Frankie). He was preceded in death by his brother Larry Rhodes. He was also a proud dog daddy to Buddy and Amelia.

He was a member of the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew in the 1980’s and also an active volunteer of the Optimist Club of Colonial Heights for over 20 years. As an optimist member he volunteered for many years at the BIB Tournament, Christmas shopping for Cancer patients at the Children’s Hospital, Fun Fishing Day, Fort Clifton Festival and numerous other optimist sponsored events. He had a passion for working with his hands whether it was fixing things around the house (his house, his daughters houses or even grandkids houses), working in his yard or making wooden crafts. He would build the crafts and his wife would paint them; they were a team in every way. He loved making wooden crafts for himself and his wife, to sell or to share with family and friends as gifts. A few of his greatest wooden treasures are the cradles he made for each of his daughters for their babies. These were gifts that will be cherished for years to come because they were made with great attention to detail and LOVE.

He was a loving husband, Daddy and Grandpa/Paw Paw. He loved his family and loved spending time with them at family gatherings, sporting events, school programs, holidays etc. He loved to coo and gurgle with the grandbabies when they were born and act silly with them as they grew. He is and will always be loved and forever held in our hearts.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at the funeral home, with Matthew Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, S. Prince George.
