Leonard Layton Lewis (93) of Colonial Heights, VA, slipped peacefully into eternity on June 30, 2026. Leonard was born to Charles and Julia Lewis on January 10, 1933. He was a graduate of Petersburg High School and a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Corporal in the Battery A, 599th Field Artillery Battalion during the Korean War.

Upon returning home in 1955, Leonard married Margaret Newcomb. The couple settled in Colonial Heights where they raised their three daughters; Deborah Chance, Wanda Helmer (Charles) and Tameria Carter (Ricky) together. They were married for 45 years. Leonard worked at Allied Chemical for 38 years before retiring.

Following the passing of his first love and mother of his children, Leonard married Barbara Wells. They spent 17 years traveling and enjoying retirement together before she was called home to the Lord.

Leonard will be remembered for his deep love of family, witty sense of humor and giving spirit. In his free time, he would often be found hunting, fishing, gardening or woodworking in his workshop creating beautiful and unique gifts for friends and family.

A faithful member of Highland United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights, his journey there began when he was just two years old and continued throughout his life.

Leonard was also a member of the American Legion Post 284 for 45 years.

Leonard leaves behind his previously mentioned daughters; five grandchildren; Leonard Chance (Amber), Kelly Ambrose (Jamie), Brandy Childs (Adam), Samantha Stone (Jeremy), Stephanie Redman (Lewis); nine great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A service to celebrate Leonard’s life will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Highland United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights, VA. The family will receive family and friends in the Sanctuary from 10:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 A.M. followed by a graveside service at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, VA. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
