Marie Alice Floyd Shumate, 85, of Prince George, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Southside Regional Medical Center Petersburg, Virginia. She was born September 11, 1940, to the late John Rueben Floyd and Pearl Winship Floyd. She is survived by her son John "Sonny" Shumate II, daughters Debra Holt (John III) and Karlene Wilkins (William). Grandchildren, Alan Outlaw, Jacob Moore, Travis Brown, Devin Gill, Megan Gill, Kailah Mattox and great grandchildren, Conner Bradner, Ryleigh Brown, and Esmae Gill. Sisters, Judy Peiffer and Patsy Floyd, brother Bruce Floyd and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. Marie enlisted in the Women's Army Corp in 1958 and was very proud to serve her country. She retired from the Department of Defense with 20 years of service. As a military veteran she was a lifetime Legionnaire and became the first women Commander of Post 2, Petersburg, Virginia. She belonged to several organizations to help serve the community. She started the Computer for Kids program and donated over 100 computers for children in need. She loved doing her genealogy and spending time with her family. Funeral services will be private. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
