Matthew Clayton Tyler, 47, of Chesterfield passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Born October 23, 1979, Matthew was the beloved son of Adrian J. Phillingame of Chesterfield, and Joseph D. and Katherine B. Tyler of Prince George.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bobby and Beverly Jones, Joseph D. Tyler, Sr. and Myrtle C. Shannon.

In addition to his parents, he leaves to cherish his memory a son, Michael C. Tyler and his mother, Megan Spease; his cousin, Lauren T. Mills; his aunt, Darla Mills; his step-sister, Cindy L. Thompson; step-brothers, Michael Lee (Julie) and Timmy Lee (Stacia); several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

An avid Green Bay Packers fan, Matthew also enjoyed playing video games and working on cars. A deeply loving father and uncle, his son was the light of his life and the "best thing that ever happened" to him. He treasured every moment spent with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
