Mike Pope

March 10, 1935 — July 10, 2025

N. Dinwiddie

Mike Pope, 90, of N. Dinwiddie passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Born March 10, 1935, he was the son of the late Newton and Mattie Pope, and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Emma Ramsey; brother, Clifton Pope; and sister, Joyce Faye Caracci.

Mike proudly served his country as a Cryptologic Technician Collection in the United States Navy for five years. His time in the service took him to many corners of the world, including the island of Cyprus, where a chance encounter would change his life forever. It was there he met the love of his life. After just a brief three-month courtship, the two were married in Cyprus, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span decades.

After his military service, Mike went on to dedicate over 30 years of his life to higher education as an Associate Professor at Virginia State University. His impact on students and colleagues alike is lasting and deeply felt.

In retirement, Mike found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid reader, often found with a National Geographic in hand or immersed in a gripping murder mystery. His passion for history—particularly the Civil War—reflected his lifelong love of learning.

Mike also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He loved tending to his vegetable garden and embarking on RV adventures across the United States, with Yellowstone holding a special place in his heart. A longtime tennis enthusiast, he enjoyed both playing the sport and following professional matches with keen interest.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sylvia Joy Pope; daughter, Sara Ellen Hano and her husband, Michiru; grandchildren, Morgan Ramsey Greene and Harry Edward Ramsey; great-grandchildren, Alice and Bill Greene; numerous beloved nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Native American Rights Fund, 250 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
