Paige Bolyn Sharpe Abeel

Paige Bolyn Sharpe Abeel, of Petersburg, died on March 20, 2022. She was born in Petersburg on February 1, 1925, the daughter of the late Ivey John Sharpe, Sr., and Lady Dean Hall Sharpe. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Elmer Raymond “Lefty” Abeel, and their infant son, Dan Gibson Abeel, and also by her five brothers: Ivey J., Jr., Hall (Virginia), Alex W., James (Val), and Robert Fairfax (Sue); and two sisters: Dean Viola Sharpe and Elizabeth “Bettie” S. Kahl (Eric). She is survived by her son, John R. “Jack” Abeel II (Anne) of Disputanta, two daughters, Mary Paige Abeel Carpenter (Dr. Kent) of Charlotte, NC, and Jane Elizabeth Abeel Fitts (Michael) of South Prince George.

She is also survived by five loving grandchildren:  Charity Abeel Zerull (William) of Chester, Amanda Abeel McDaniel (Eric) of Chantilly, Joseph Michael Abeel Fitts (Renee) of Disputanta, Margaret Elizabeth Carpenter Haigh (Nicolas) of New York, NY, and Noelle Paige Fitts Bess (Jonathan) of Prince George; seven great grandchildren, Lee Anne-Marie Zerull Farley (Jonathan) and Jacqueline Denise Zerull Crews (Jared), Isaac, Jacob and Elizabeth McDaniel, Jewel Harry, and Evelyn Jane Bess; two special nieces, Dean Kahl Challen of Georgia and Kandy Kahl Barton of South Carolina; several nieces and nephews, the Schultz and Edwards families of upstate New York.

Her loving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were a joy and blessings in her life. Mrs. Abeel was an active member of Monumental Baptist Church until her recent declining health.  She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She was a 1942 graduate of Petersburg High School, retired from Civil Service at Fort Lee. She enjoyed flower gardening, spending time in her yard and feeding the birds and the squirrels. She loved all her doggies and kitty cats throughout the years.  Her loving special dog, Bunny, lived to be 20 years, 8 months and eight days.  She showed kindness to all animals. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Teresa McCrae, Kathy Law, Marlo Holloway, Emma Dennis and Audrey Jackson who provided much love and support, and a special thank you to Dorothy Smith who was a faithful friend and helper for many years.

The family will receive friends at Monumental Baptist Church at 2925 S. Crater Road on Thursday, March 24 one hour before the service. The Reverend Duane Guridy will conduct the Celebration of Paige’s life. Funeral service will be held at the church at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Monumental Baptist Church or The SPCA of Petersburg and Colonial Heights, 104A Pickwick Avenue, Colonial Heights, VA  23834.
