Peggy Wommack Baird

December 6, 1929 — March 5, 2024

Colonial Heights

Peggy Wommack Baird, 94 of Colonial Heights, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 in Tyler’s Retreat, Chesterfield. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was well thought of and admired by all who knew her and was blessed to have a number of special friends throughout her long life.

Born in Petersburg, Virginia on December 6, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Forrest Benjamin and Alice Vaughan Wommack. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald P. Baird; her sister, Ernestine Wommack Rudy; and brother, Forrest Sinclair Wommack.

Peggy graduated from Petersburg High School in 1946. She joined Second Presbyterian Church when she was fifteen years old and was a faithful and dedicated member ever since. She set a record for longest continuous service as first soprano in the church choir, retiring from singing in 2022 after more than seventy years, praising the Lord and providing solos for innumerable weddings and funerals. She also directed the Children’s Choir for 15 years. She was later recruited by a church member to teach music for Adventureland Kindergarten in Petersburg, serving as a pre-school and kindergarten teacher for more than 20 years.

Peggy remained active in her golden years by performing at senior centers and convalescent homes as part of the Tap-Dancing Grannies and the Southernaire’s choral group.

She is survived by her loving children, Donald Martin Baird (Karla), Anne Baird Cizek (Billy), Forrest Clayton Baird (Clare), and Susan Baird Reinhardt (Robin); nine grandchildren, Aaron (Dani), Jennifer (Dave), Daniel (Maria), Will (Emily), Jeffrey (Kristin), Leah (Josh), Edmund, Oliver and Jackson; fifteen great-grandchildren, Cameron, Mackenzie, Madelyn, Charlie, Ella, Sophia, Nolan, Asher, Graham, Truett, Ethan, Tristan, Aiden, River and Cassidy; and other extended family members.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2024, at Second Presbyterian Church, 419 Washington Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23803. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Monday, March 25, 2024 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at church.
