Listen to Obituary

Phillip Herman Johnson, 80, of Sutherland passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Born February 5, 1946, he was the son of the late Herman Phillip and Elizabeth Johnson.

Phillip served six years in the United States Navy, completing three tours in Vietnam aboard the USS Ranger. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer, a role that reflected his dedication and strong sense of duty.

After his military service, Phillip continued a life of commitment through his work as a member of Local 10 Plumbers and Steam Fitters for 50 years. He was also a parishioner of St. John Nepomucene in Dinwiddie for many years and was a 2nd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

In his earlier years, Phillip gave his time as a little league football coach at Midway in Dinwiddie, helping guide and encourage young players. He enjoyed fishing, boating with family at Lake Chesdin, and spending time outdoors. He was also an avid Civil War relic hunter, a hobby that reflected his interest in history and the stories of the past.

He is survived by his loving wife of about 60 years, Virginia Johnson; sons, Phillip A. Johnson (Sally), Robert Johnson (Beth), Vincent Johnson (Laura); beloved grandchildren, Victoria Johnson, Abigail Johnson, Alexander Johnson, Hunter Johnson, Ryan Johnson (Celeste), Dustin Grissom (Christian), William French (Matthew); adored great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Grissom, Lily Grissom, Dustin Grissom, Jr., Bentley Grissom, and Baby Salem on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann Kreutler; numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
