Raymond Lee Burton, Sr., 84, of Hopewell, VA, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Born in Arlington, VA on November 30, 1939, he was the son of the late Melvin Cosby Burton, Sr. and Constance Simpkins Burton. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Cosby Burton, Jr.
Ray dedicated over 30 years working for Reynolds Metals, and then went to work for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for 15 years. Ray was a talented singer and passionate baritone who shared his gift through a Barber Shop Quartet and the Tobaccoland Chorus in the 1960s and 70s. An avid golf enthusiast, Ray was a member of the Bellwood Golf League. He also loved traveling with his beloved wife, Margy, often exploring the United States. They traveled to many different places, but Myrtle Beach, SC, held a special place in his heart and was always "his spot." Ray also enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially tending to his yard, which he took great pride in.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Margy Robertson Burton; children, Raymond “Lee” Burton, Jr. and wife, Jill, Gordon “Keith” Burton and wife, Shawn, and Cindy B. Watts and husband, Brandon; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nephews, Scott Burton and Chris Burton; niece, Terry Kutenkuler and husband, Joe; and many other extended family members and friends.
The family receive friends for a memorial visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA. Inurnment will take place privately in Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield, VA.
