Raymond Bryant Prater, Jr.

November 30, 1950 — July 19, 2025

Disputanta

Raymond Bryant Prater, Jr., affectionately known as Buddy, 74, of Disputanta passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2025. Born November 30, 1950, he was the son of the late Linda Maxine Turner and Raymond Bryant Prater, Sr.; and was also preceded in death by his nephew, Jeremiah D. Johnson.

Buddy served his country with honor as a U.S. Navy veteran, dedicating six years of his life to protecting and upholding the values he held dear. Following his military service, he went on to build a long and successful career with Advansix (formerly Allied Chemical), retiring after many years as a respected Shift Supervisor.

Outside of his professional life, Buddy was a man of many passions. He had a deep appreciation for World War II history and built an impressive collection of memorabilia over the years. His knowledge and stories captivated anyone who had the chance to talk with him about that pivotal time in history.

Buddy found great joy in simple pleasures—riding his beloved Harley Wide Glide along open roads, tending to his yard and garden with care, and spending time outdoors. His home and garden were a reflection of his pride, patience, and love for nature.

He is survived by his lifelong companion, Jeanne-Marie McGahagin; sister, Sandra P. Johnson and her husband, Bryan; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members; and two sons, Stephen and Kevin Prater and their families.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
