Richard Ray Reid Jr “Rick”, 69, passed away peacefully at his home on July 1, 2026, surrounded by his family. Rick will be remembered for his servant’s heart. He served his community as a police officer for many years, his church in multiple ways and his family by being a wonderful spouse and father. He will also be remembered for his stern facial expressions that eventually led to the nickname of “Boss Man”. Those who knew him know that he was more bark than bite. He had a very strong and confident presence that made everyone around him feel safe and secure. He was dependable, loved to read and loved the Civil War. He also loved guns and was passionate in educating people in firearms use and safety.
Born in Hopewell, Virginia to Ray and Josephine Reid, he attended St. James Catholic School, Hopewell High School, John Tyler Community College and Radford College. He had a long career in law enforcement, beginning as a cadet at the Petersburg Bureau of Police and retiring as a Career Detective at the Chesterfield County Police Department. He then went to work for the US Marshal Service as an analyst and later as a court security officer. After several years working for Geico insurance, he landed his favorite job working as a salesperson at Town Gun Shop.
Rick was in the Order of DeMolay: Past Master Counselor Order of the Chevalier, life member of the Hopewell Emergency Crew and a member of the Petersburg Masonic Lodge #15. He was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he served on several committees with his last position being head of security.
Rick will be deeply missed by his wife and children as well as many loving church family members and friends. Rick is preceded in death by his father, Richard Ray Reid Sr. He is survived by his spouse Pam Reid, son Zack Reid of Chesterfield, daughter Kelsey Reid of Chesterfield, mother Josephine Reid of Hopewell, sister Rene McKaig (Bob) of Mechanicsville, niece and nephews and cousins. He will also be missed by his beloved dogs-Remington and Dixie as well as his grand cat Winston.
The Reid family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the love and support we have been shown from our family, friends, members of Wesley Chapel UMC, Dr Voelzke and his team with Virginia Cancer Institute, his caregiver Shirley Jones, Jennifer and Lori with Amedisys Home Health and Diana and Tierany with Amedisys Hospice.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 9227 River Road, South Chesterfield, Virginia 23803. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in honor of Rick. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
