IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Walter
Wharton
July 22, 1940 – January 24, 2026
Robert Walter Wharton, 85, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Born July 22, 1940, he was the son of the late Earl Robert and Marjorie Clair Wharton. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gail Ann Taylor-Wharton; son, Barrett Wharton; and sister, Earlene Laymon.
Robert earned his Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, a foundation that launched a lifelong career in archaeology. Following graduation, he began his professional work in California before eventually relocating to Virginia, where he continued his archaeological career until his retirement in 2012. Through decades of fieldwork, Robert dedicated himself to preserving history and ensuring that the stories of the past were respectfully protected.
Retirement did not mark an end to his service. Robert continued giving his time and expertise as a volunteer with the Department of Historic Resources and at Kittiewan Plantation in Charles City, remaining deeply connected to the work he loved and the history he valued.
Outside of archaeology, Robert found joy in working with his hands. He was an avid woodworker who took pride in crafting things like benches, tables, and coat racks.
Robert loved the beach and cherished time spent with his family. He and his wife shared a dream of building a home in Buxton on Hatteras Island. Though his wife passed before the dream could be realized together, Robert carried it forward in her memory, building their home with what was described as a “million-dollar view.” Building the home became his way of honoring the life and love they planned together.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Lori Bass and husband, Eric; son, Jeffrey Taylor and wife, Katherine; daughter-in-law, Susie Wharton; 14 beloved grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Interment will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Crater Road Chapel or E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23805. Online Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
