Wilford "Joe" Joseph Green Jr., passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Johnston Willis Hospital in Chesterfield, Virginia. Joe was born in Petersburg, Virginia on May 12, 1957. Joe joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1976 and served a 2-year mission in the California Fresno Mission from 1978-1980. He graduated from Virginia State University in 1984 and spent most of his career working as a government contractor on Fort Lee. Joe was a former Boy Scouts of America Scout and Cub Master, member of the Girl Scouts Commonwealth Council of Virginia board and both a board member and membership director for Colonial Heights Swim and Yacht Club for many years. He served on the Colonial Heights School Board from 1996 – 2009 and on the Colonial Heights City Council from 2009 – 2020. At his death he was serving on the District 19 Board and Colonial Heights Youth Advisory Council. When not working, Joe enjoyed following the Dallas Cowboys during both winning and losing seasons. He loved a good road trip and drove cross country many times to visit his daughter Beth and grandchildren in Utah and to move his daughters, Emily and Mollie, to and from college in Idaho. He never passed up an opportunity to help someone move or to drive folks wherever they needed to go. He liked to do his own car and home repairs and could use a good YouTube video to fix just about anything. He most enjoyed time spent with family, particularly his grandchildren. Joe lived a life of service, following the example of his Savior Jesus Christ. He was generous to a fault and always put the interests and needs of those around him before his own. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilford Joseph Green Sr. and mother, Joyce Evelyn Green Ryder. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Claudia Clestelle Green; daughters Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Gardner (Dallas), Emily Clestelle Staggs (Chris) and Mollie Rebecca Green. He left 7 grandchildren who knew him as Grandpa and Papa Joe: Derek William Gardner (7), Addison Clestelle Staggs (5), Natalie Marie Gardner (5) Ellie Mae Gardner (4), Kennedy Louise Staggs (3), Katie Joann Gardner (18 mo), and James Glen Gardner (7 mo). Sister Joyce Green Dayvault (David) and brother Timothy Augustus Green (Trish). Nieces Michelle August Reierson (Matt) and Shelby Dayvault Tinsley (Charlie). Nephews: Matthew David Dayvault and Joshua Augustus Green. Aunt, Josephine Vaughan Joyner and stepfather, Larry W. Ryder. Joe will be sorely missed and is gone too soon, but his family knows we can be a forever family and look forward to being together with him again one day. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 22, 2022, in the Appomattox Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 1800 Johnson Road Petersburg, Virginia 23805.
