Rev. Dr. William L. Hales 79, of Colonial Heights died Saturday May 10, 2009 at Johnston Willis Medical Center. He was the son of the late Samuel and Ivey Peed Hales .Rev. Hales was a graduate of Petersburg High School, University of Richmond, BD from Union Theological Seminary, THM and DMIN from Southeastern Theological Seminary. Clinical Pastoral Education was completed at the Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. He served a field of churches between college and seminary, including Central Baptist, Smyrna Baptist, Sharon Baptist and Cut Banks Baptist. His full time pastorates were Hulls Memorial Baptist Church, Pocahontas Basset Baptist Church and First Baptist Church Annandale. Rev. Hales was active in Virginia Baptist life serving on many committees and boards, and was the first moderator of the Fredericksburg Baptist Association. He served as a trustee for the Religious Herald. After retiring, he served a number of churches as an interim pastor. Bill was currently serving as Interim Pastor of West End Baptist Church in Petersburg, Virginia. He is survived by his wife Feigh Hart Hales, a daughter Kathy Hales Thompson and her husband Rev. Robert Thompson of Ashland, grandchildren, Lance Corporal Matthew B. Thompson United States Marine Corp of Hanover, Christopher Y. Thompson of Ashland, brother Joe C. Hales Sr., of Colonial Heights, three sister in-laws Josephine Hales, Betty King, Norma Harper, a brother in law Carl Hart and wife Alice, and beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday May 13, 2008 at West End Baptist Church 6506 Boydton Plank Rd Petersburg, with the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Rd. Petersburg Va. First Baptist Church 800 Thompson Street Ashland Virginia 23005, or Wakefield Baptist Church 104 W. Church Street Wakefield, Virginia,23888 in lieu of flowers and food.
