Obituary

William Joseph “Bill” Sweeney, Jr., 89, of South Chesterfield passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026. A proud New Yorker, Bill was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 6, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents, William J. Sweeney and Lillian McNamara Sweeney; and by his beloved brother, Raymond “Ray” Sweeney.

Bill lived a full and spirited life, fueled by his love of the outdoors, adventure, and family. He enjoyed hunting, skiing, riding his motorcycle, watching NASCAR and football, and traveling far and wide with his devoted wife of 36 years, Angela Bonanno-Sweeney, who was not only his partner but truly his best friend.

Bill took tremendous pride in his career in law enforcement and public service. He began as an industrial engraver but soon felt called to a more meaningful path. Starting with the Auxiliary Police, he went on to serve several constabulary villages on Long Island before joining the Richmond Sheriff’s Office. Through dedication and hard work, he rose from Deputy to Sergeant and ultimately became Assistant Director of the Training Academy. He was especially proud to follow in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Sheriff in Nassau County, New York, and to see that legacy continue through his youngest son, now a Deputy in Suffolk County, New York.

He was also a proud member of the Blue Knights NY Chapter 1 since the early 1980s, where he found another extended family and shared countless memories and lifelong friendships.

Bill is lovingly survived by his cherished baby sister, Sharon Sweeney Zarcone, and by his four sons, whom he was endlessly proud of, Michael Sweeney (Susie), Brian Sweeney, Scott Sweeney (Alicia), and his youngest, Dan Sweeney. He also leaves behind five treasured grandchildren, Ryan Sweeney, Keegan Sweeney, Danica Sweeney, Paige Sweeney, and Kaylee Sweeney, who brought him immense joy.

Bill is also survived by his special sister-in-law, Maryann Bonanno Davidson; nephews, Jason Davidson, John Bonanno, and Nicholas Bonanno; niece, Ashton Bonanno; and great-nephew, Nicholas Bonanno. He held a special place in his heart for his stepson, Christopher Sigismondi, whom he loved as his own. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews including Pasquale Zarcone (Gina), Joseph Zarcone (Kristine), Christian Zarcone (Tina), John Zarcone (Nichole), and Nichole Zarcone Massaro (Joseph), along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. Bill is also remembered fondly by numerous cousins on both sides of his family and by dear friends Ray and Cathy Petersen, Linda Lewis, Al and Sharon Katie Fleming, Sheila Bowles, and John and Fran Borrero, all of whom brought great joy and friendship into his life.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Trinity Hospice for their compassionate care and support during Bill’s final weeks, with special thanks to Hospice Nurse Brandi and Hospice Aide Pat for their kindness and dedication.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening, February 13, 2026 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
