Janet Haskins

December 3, 1924 — July 24, 2021

Janet Mann Haskins, 96, of Chester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2021, with family by her side.  Born in Petersburg, Virginia on December 3, 1924, she remained connected to her community throughout her life.  On May 28, 1960, she eloped and married Robert Zehmer Haskins of McKenney, Virginia, who preceded her in death in 1989.

Janet was the daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Sallie Harrison Mann, and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph D. and Donald J. Mann; an infant sister, Frances H. Mann; and recently her dearest friend of 76 years, Carolyn D. Curtis.

After working as a civilian at Fort Lee Army Base in Prince George, Virginia, she left to devote all of her energy to her family.  A kind and loving mother, she never missed any activity in which her children participated, supporting them unconditionally.

A strong and optimistic lady, Janet always had time for friends and family.  She unselfishly cared for many of them in exceptional ways. She was an active, lifetime member of Second Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, Virginia.  She enjoyed church circle, bridge club, and especially traveling with friends.

Janet is survived by two sons, Reps M. Haskins (Joan) and Robert Z. Haskins, Jr.; and three grandsons, Austin David Jones (Kelly), Robert Curtis Haskins and Ashton Leigh Haskins; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she adored.

The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to all the friends and family who visited and wrote Janet as her health declined.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Second Presbyterian Church, 419 W. Washington Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23803. A private interment will follow the service in Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery, McKenney, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral on Friday from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 24741-5014.
