Joseph Mcgrath

January 20, 1940 — May 16, 2020

Joseph Edward McGrath of Chester, Virginia passed away on May 16, 2020 at the age of 80.  Born in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1940 to Joseph & Mildred McGrath. He is survived by his wife, Delores of 56 years.  He had two daughters, Caria A. McGrath & Darlene Vogel of Livingston, Montana.  His siblings include Patty a sister in Williamsburg, Virginia, Kathy who lives in Milford, Pennsylvania, Kevin in Cape Coral, Florida, and David who lives in Massachusetts.  At a young age he served as an altar boy for St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  He was also a pitcher for St. Michael’s High School baseball team. He attended college at the University of Massachusetts, achieving a bachelors & master’s degree as well. Major Joseph E. McGrath served 20 years in the Air Force.  He held numerous positions, such as, a controller, meteorologist and NORAD.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his expertise as a controller even though he was not a pilot. During his career in the Air Force, he and his family travelled many places and abroad outside the U.S. Following his departure from the Air Force he worked for Virginia Linen Service for 35 years as a programmer. Dad enjoyed spending time with his family, playing games, building models and singing.  He loved all animals and fed any that showed up including cats, dogs, racoons, possum, squirrels and would take animals to the vet to be spayed & shots for all cats. He loved to play bridge in which he achieved Life Master status.  The loss of this very kind, gentle, loving father and friend will be greatly missed.  He will forever be remembered & loved by his family and friends. Until we meet again in Heaven Dad . . . . . . . . .
