Thelma Berry

September 4, 1919 — February 19, 2021

Thelma May Peterson Berry, 101 years old, of Colonial Heights, went to be with The Lord Friday, February 19, 2021.  She was born September 4, 1919 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to the late Clarence and Augusta Peterson.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hartwell Phillips Berry; grandson, James E. Russell III “Tripp”; sister, Beatrice Sharp; and her mother-in-law, Eugenia Berry.  Thelma is survived by her daughter, Judith B. Russell and her husband James E. Russell, Jr. “Jim”; and several nieces and nephews.  Thelma was a lifetime member of High Street United Methodist Church in Petersburg until the church closed.  She then transferred her membership to Wesley United Methodist Church, who she considered her church family until her passing.  Her work career began later in life where she had several jobs, but her primary career was at Bellwood (Defense General Supply Center).  Thelma had a very special relationship with her grandson, Tripp, until his untimely death 20 years ago.  They have now been reunited and are sure to be enjoying fishing and being on the water in heaven together.  Due to Covid restrictions, only a graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 2021 at the mausoleum at Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, S. Prince George, Va., 23805 with Rev. Jeaux Simmons and Rev. Brian Simmons officiating.  Thelma’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the Petersburg Home for Ladies for their extraordinary professional care and loving support.  This made the later years of her life enjoyable, entertaining, and a family experience.  The family would also like to thank Crater Community Hospice.  Flowers are welcome, but donations may be made in Thelma’s memory to the Petersburg Home for Ladies Fellowship Fund 311 S. Jefferson Street, Petersburg, VA  23803.  Arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home.  Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com
